In order to keep the opportunity to participate in the San Francisco Spikes soccer club and compete in leagues and tournaments affordable to as many players as possible, we fundraise 2-3 times per year.  But this isn't your high school fundraiser.  No bake sales or candy bars here!  We annually volunteer to operate a beverage booth at the Gay Pride festival in June, and one at the Folsom Street Fair in September.

This is a weekend-long event, and the Spikes have been lucky enough to be selected to operate a large/high-volume beverage booth for the last few years.  As an organization we typically have to provide staff all day on Saturday and all day on Sunday (the busy parade day).  This event is really a lot of fun to work!  The last few years, we've contributed 100-150 man-hours of work over this weekend, and raised thousands of dollars to help support the club's mission.

Each year we designate an individual to organize and schedule our members to work this booth.  For 2007, that person is Carlos Alvarado.  The Spikes would also like to thank Barry Skown for his efforts which have allowed us to continue working at Pride & Folsom and raising money for the organizaiton.

Folsom Street Fair Drink Booth

This is a one-day event where the Spikes have operated a beverage booth for the last few years.  As an organization we typically have to provide staff all day on Sunday.  This event is also a lot of fun to work - but be prepared to see a lot of skin (and not always on the people you might wish for)!  The last few years, we've contributed 60-80 man-hours of work over this weekend, and raised thousands of dollars to help support the club's mission.

The funds raised by our efforts at these events benefit the entire club.  They help us secure practice fields, purchase uniforms and equipment, subsidize travel to tournaments and keep the club and team dues as affordable as possible.  So if you're a Spikes member, please contribute your time when these events come around.

Miss Spikes UniverseMinimize
The Spikes have put a unique gay twist on the typical new member initiation by periodically hosting the "Miss Spikes Universe Pageant."  Held about every two years with ever improving production values, the Spikes put on quite a show!

Some of our team's funniest, most entertaining, and most cherished memories come from these mock beauty competitions, in which participating players pick a country to represent, dress in drag, and create their own unique personality to vie for the title. Parade of Nations, Interview, Talent and Final Question competitions are held to determine who is crowned the royalty of our team. For some, playfully imitating a beauty contestant comes naturally, while others work hard at it and still fail, often tragically and always hysterically. Sometimes the shyest and most unassuming Spike will shine, while another who might be expected to win doesn't even place in the Top 5.

Participation in this event is strictly voluntary - unless of course you're a rookie - in which case you should start thinking about what country to represent and what name you'd like to take now.  Rookie participation is mandatory when the event is held.

The show is expertly hosted by Shandi Burbwood, Porntip Nakhironkanok, and Kaye Lani Rae, whose wit, humor, and sarcasm keep everyone (including the contestants) laughing.  We typically have pre-show wardrobe and makeup assistance, a panel of "expert" judges, and a gowing audience of significant others and friends.

The tradition was started in 1997 in part because several of the new inductees to the team were pageant fans. The first Miss Spikes Universe Pageant was held in a hotel room in Washington D.C. during that year's IGLFA tournament. In 1998 and 2000, pageants were held in hotel suites in Atlanta, Georgia and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. By 2002 and 2004, the pageant had grown so big and popular that it was moved to the LGBT Community Center in San Francisco, drawing standing room only crowds and raising signiifcant funds for the team to use for its expenses and tournament travel.   

There have been five Miss Spikes Universe winners, as follows:
  • 1997:  Miss Hawaii, Kaye Lani Rae
  • 1998:  Miss Thailand, Porntip Nakhironkanok
  • 2000:  Miss Peru, Flor del campo de una tarde soleada de primavera Phillips
  • 2002:  Miss China, Suki My Dong Yu Young Ho
  • 2004:  Miss Holland, Finga Inga Dyke
  • 2007: Will it be you?
It is unclear when the next pageant will be held, but whenever it is, it is expected to continue to further its original aim - to bond us as a team, to offer comic relief, and to show that gay jocks can work their magic on the soccer field and the pageant runway.
