2008 SeasonMarin Team : Game Report
Game Date:Opponent:Final Score:
The Spikes played the sixteenth game on the Marin league schedule on Saturday August 2nd at Redwood High School against San Geronimo, a team we had beaten easily a few weeks ago. This was the second game of three group play matches in the post season tournament. The game was played at 1 PM on the artificial turf on a hot and very sunny day. It brought back memories from Chicago as the sizzling turf was scalding the bottoms of everyone’s feet. The Spikes started out well, creating come dangerous chances as Chris F and Chris J, both up top as forwards early on, broke through the slower defense with ease. Our defense was unchallenged for much of the first half as San Geronimo had trouble holding onto the ball. Chris J stormed through the defense and poked the ball past a befuddled goalie to put the Spikes ahead 1-0.
We had only a single sub, which was a slight problem as many people needed a break at one point or another for a variety of reasons, such as 1) burning feet, 2) bee sting on instep, 3) need to change shoes, 4) asthma attack, 5) tweaked hamstring, 6) need a drink, 7) too tired – and that was all just in the first half. San Geronimo started the game with only one sub, but had at least 4 by the end of the game, as more players showed up to play for them around half time. This showed in the game as the second half was much more evenly matched. San Geronimo pressed hard in the early part of the second half and were unlucky to be kept scoreless on a long string of corner kicks. Ed leaped into the air on one to head a very well placed shot off the goal line to preserve our lead. After weathering this storm of shots, the Spikes fought back to create more of our own chances as the energy of the fresher San Geronimo players wore off. At the end of one attack, Bob charged in and smashed a cross at the top of the box into the goal just inside of the far near post to put the Spikes ahead 2-0. San Geronimo seemed frustrated and resigned at this point and the Spikes were able to close out the win and earn our fourth shut out in the last 6 games (!!!). Up next is a rematch with the Pikers in our final group play match next week. After that we move on to the semi finals on the 16th. Go Spikes! Players: Barry, Bob, Bobby, Chris F, Chris J, Ed, Gideon, Gil, Matt, Michael, Scott, Thang
