April 5, 2008
Amistad
L 2-3

Report: The Spikes played their first game of the Marin season on Saturday, April 5th, at McGinnis Park . It was a 9 AM game, so the Spikes started out a little slow and sleepy. The grass was long, wet and slippery, making it difficult to control the ball and connect passes. However, the Spikes had the better of the play in the first half in terms of possession, and scoring opportunities. Izzy and Chris broke through a number of times to create dangerous chances, but none found the back of the net. Our opponent, Amistad, was shockingly efficient, cashing in on two of their very few scoring opportunities, taking a 2-0 lead into half time. The Spikes were hungry to turn things around as the grass dried out and made it easier to play. The Spikes switched from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 formation to put more pressure on the opponent’s suspect defense. Possession and scoring opportunities were again heavily weighted towards the Spikes, but it was Amistad who struck first, putting them ahead 3-0. This lit a fire under the frustrated Spikes as they fought even harder. York hit a perfect long ball over the defense, placing it just in front of an onrushing Bob, who outworked the defense and slotted home a pretty goal. Not long after, Chris J deflected a cross to the far post, where Pat M charged in and smashed it into the back of the net to make the score 3-2. The Spikes pressed hard for what would have been a well deserved third goal to earn a tie, but it was not to be. The final whistle blew before the Spikes could turn their pressure into a goal. Final score was 3-2, but the Spikes should take great pride in fighting back from a three goal deficit. Good job Spikes!
