| Report: | On another beautiful
Saturday in Marin, the Spikes took on San Geronimo, a team we know well from
years of playing against them. They've struggled this year, but always seem to
play us tough, so we couldn't take their record for granted.
Â
We started out
strong, and our efforts paid off when Chris was able to beat their goalie to a
ball at the edge of their box, and head it over his head for our first goal.Â
San Geronimo "equalized" when one of their forwards, who had made it to our end
line, played a ball along our goal line which was saved by Matthew.Â
Unfortunately, this week's game had no linesmen, and a lazy center ref who was
often 40 yards from play. On this occasion it mattered, as he awarded a goal to
San Geronimo despite the ball never crossing the goal line - which he couldn't
see from center field where he was standing. This sparked our tempers and also
our intensity.ÂChris answered soon after with his second goal of the game, and Brian
followed later in the first half with an exact replay of Chris' first goal -
beating their keeper to a ball, and heading it over his outstretched arms to put
us up 3-1 at the end of the first half.
Â
We continued our
strong play in the second half, pressing their goal often. York "the garbage
man" Lackey put the Spikes up 4-1 on another of his patented tap-ins after some
frantic confusion in front of their goal. San Geronimo scored their first goal
off a corner kick to come within 2, but that was as close as they would come.Â
Adel scored our 5th goal of the day on a sharp angle shot to complete our 5-2
victory. As time wound down, San Geronimo pressed many men forward (including
their goalie), which led to many quality scoring opportunities for the Spikes
counter-attack. But we couldn't quite put together the final touches we
needed. On top of putting 5 in the back of the net, we dominated the midfield,
and played consistently strong defense all game long. A great team effort all
around!
Â
This win puts us
into the semi-finals of the year-end tournament on the 25th (with UCA, Club
Marin Bhoys, 1 team TBD). But first we take on league leaders UCA again next
week. Our 15 players were: Patrick J, Ed, Patrick M., Michael, Ryo, Bob, Gil,
Brian, York, Karl, Adel, Barry, Gideon, Chris, and Matthew.
