Spikes I continues its winning ways - Sunday, June 06, 2010

Showing how deep its roster is this year, Spikes I took on Club Marin Azzuri for the second time this year with only 2 subs, both of whom were returning from injured reserve. But they controlled the game from start to finish, and buried 4 shots in the back of the net, winning 4-0.  Spikes I remains in second place, and takes on long-time rival UCA next Saturday at 11:00 am at Drake HS.  Go Spikes!

Spikes Represented Well in Seattle Tournament - Sunday, June 06, 2010

The tournament drew ~150 players mostly from Seattle / Vancouver / Portland. There was lots of interest among the players in a similar event in San Francisco.  Something for us to consider for 2011... Go Spikes!

Spikes II Season Update: 3 W's in a row! - Wednesday, March 03, 2010

Spikes II has began its season in the Sports4Good league in late January, and we've finally found our groove.  After a heart-breaking loss in our season opener in the last 20 seconds of the game, we fought hard but came up short in the next two games leaving us frustrated at 0-3.  Undeterred, Spikes II stormed back in Game #4 to earn its first W of the season 3-1.  Game #5 was 5-1 stomping of our hapless opponent, and some of the prettiest soccer we've played in SF. Game #6 ended 3-1 for our 3rd victory in a row, and could easily have been more.  We've got a bye this Sunday, and play our last game of the first half of our season on Sunday March 14.  Come cheer us on, as we try to head into the mid-season playoffs on a 4 game win streak. Go Spikes!

Public transportation is very close by. It's a 10-15 minute walk up 17th Street from the Castro underground stop, a few blocks from the 33 and half a block from the 37. Parking is generally pretty easy too. All Spikes are invited to this meeting and you're encouraged to attend if you have an interest in participating on the second team. Go Spikes!

Spikes I Season Update - Wednesday, March 03, 2010

A group of Spikes I players have been keeping active this off-season competing in a NorCal Athletics 8v8 league on Tuesday nights. The league is highly competitive, and has helped us play fast, controlled soccer, and improve our conditioning.  Last night we finished our regular season games with a fantastic 4-0 win over a strong opponent, playing some of the best soccer I've ever seen the Spikes play. That W earned us a spot in the playoffs next Tuesday night.  Spikes I regular season will begin in Marin on Saturday April 3, and run through August.  Go Spikes!

First Outdoor Practice - Thursday, February 19, 2009
We will try and hold our first outdoor practice again this weekend.  We have reserved West Sunset Field #1 on Sunday 2/22 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  The field is at 39th Ave and Quintara St in the Sunset.   Unfortunately, it's supposed to rain this weekend, and being a grass field, West Sunset is subject to being closed due to weather by the Rec Department.  I will update the team as soon as I know if the field is closed due to rain.

Like last week, this practice is for all Spikes, and is a good way for everyone to start getting in shape for the fast-approaching outdoor season.  The other goal of this session is to give newer players an opportunity to see where they might fit in the organization in terms of which outdoor team they might like to try to play for.  We'll make it clear who are the organizers are for the SFSFL and Marin teams so you can talk to them about your interest in playing for either team.  Again, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come and play.

Marin Spikes Unbeaten in 5! - Saturday, July 12, 2008

The Marin Spikes beat San Geronimo today 4-0, to extend their unbeaten streak to 5 games.  Completing their third consecutive shutout, they have not conceeded a goal in over 270 minutes now!  As we gradually return from injuries and travel, we are surely showing the Marin Soccer League that we are a force to be reckoned with.  In today's game, Chris Jansen scored a hat trick (Contrats, Chris!), and Adel put in the fourth for the Spikes.  We had many other opportunities to extend our lead, and the defense shut down all of SG's opportunities, leaving Matthew with little work in goal.  Go Spikes!

Spikes back on track... updates back on track - Monday, June 30, 2008

The Marin Spikes have gotten back to their winning ways!  After a tough couple of games due to the incredible amount of injuries we've suffered this season, the Spikes Marin team is unbeaten in their last 4 games.  We tied both Club Marin 1-1, and a tough Marin FC Kono team 2-2.  Then on a sweltering hot day, we beat the Cougars 3-0, and this past Saturday, knocked off our old foes the Pikers 2-0.  Our record is now 4-4-4.  With players returning from injuries, our play has improved, and we have a very positive outlook for the end of the season!  Go Spikes!

Fundraising success, and some time off - Monday, June 30, 2008

The Spikes completed their largest fundraiser of the year on Saturday, operating a drink booth at the annual San Francisco Pride festival.  As always, the club members came out in great numbers for what was a fun and successful fundraising event.  Next weekend both the San Francisco team and the Marin team have the week off due to the 4th of July holiday.  Go Spikes!

Spikes get back on track in Marin - Thursday, May 22, 2008

After struggling with injuries and travel the last few weeks, the Marin team finally put together a game that represents the soccer we're capable of playing.  Last Saturday, we took on West Tam United, a team tied for first place in our league, and beat them 5-1.  York led the scroing with 2 goals, while Gil, Chris, and Adel added one each.  Matthew had a near shut-out in goal - fending off a barrage of attacks - after having been forced out of the net by injury for the last 2 weeks.  This was a truly a team effort that required all 14 of us to step up and play our role.  Go Spikes!

SHOOTERS: Spikes Happy Hour @ Truck on Fri 5/23 - Wednesday, May 21, 2008

The Spikes are throwing another happy hour at Truck (15th st and Folsom) this Friday 5/23 from  6-9 pm.  If you were at our first happy hour, you know they're a blast.  You won't want to miss this one!  So come out for $2 shots, sexy strippers, and much more.  Go Spikes!

Spikes SF Team Earns 1st point of the season - Monday, April 14, 2008

The Spikes SF Team tied Internazional 2-2 on Sunday to earn their first league point of the season. On a beautiful day at the Polo Fields, the SF team dominated the first 35 minutes of the game, creating many chances, but was unable to convert them.  Then in the last 10 minutes of the half, we conceded 2 goals - both on unfortunate deflections.  But the Spikes once again showed their resolve, and came out strong in the 2nd half, and with about 15 minutes to go, drew a handball in the penalty box.  Karl converted the PK to cut their lead in half.  Energized the Spikes forced a goalkeeper mistake on a passback a few minutes later that tied the game 2-2.  We almost put the game winner in with just seconds to go, but finished splitting the points with our opponents.  GREAT team effort, and a solid result!  Go Spikes!

Hobbled by Injuries, Marin Team Drops Season Opener - Wednesday, April 09, 2008

The Spikes Marin Team kicked off the season on Saturday, loosing 3-2 to Amistad.  Playing with just 12 men and a shifted lineup, we still played good soccer on perfect pitches at McGinnis Park.  The Spikes conceeded 2 goals in the first half on 2 beautiful shots and entered half time down 0-2.  We came out strong in the 2nd half, and York's perfect long thru pass to Bob sent him unobstructed to the goal, and he beat the keeper on a beautiful shot to the lower right corner.  The Spikes 2nd goal came from a strong cross from Adel on the left flank, that was flicked on by Chris Jansen in the middle to a waiting Pat McCarthy who made his run all the way from defense to volley the ball into the back of the net.  Alas, we conceeded a third goal to Amistad that hit the inside of the post, and though we pressed and controlled most of the 2nd half, we just couldn't equalize.   Though we earned no points, we showed great resolve in dominiating the 2nd half despite being down 2 goals.  Go Spikes!

Spikes successful at NY Indoor Classic Tournament - Tuesday, April 01, 2008

For the 3rd consecutive year, the Spikes competed in the NY Indoor Classic Tournament - sending 2 full squads this year.  Spikes A finished the 6 game round-robin with a 5-1 record, falling in its first game to Florida, but winning our next 5 against New York, Atlanta, Boston, Washington DC, and Chicago.  This earned us the 3rd overall seed in the Division 1 playoffs.  We easily beat a different Washington DC team in the quarter-finals, and got our revenge against Florida in the Semi-Finals beating them 3-1.  By the time we arrived in the finals, injuries and illness had decimated our roster, leaving us with just a single sub (who played valiantly with 2 broken ribs of his own).  Here we fell to the toughest of the 3 Washington DC teams, and finished in 2nd place overall (of 20 teams).  Spikes B played great soccer all day against a tough set of opponents in the other round-robin bracket.  The finished up 1-1-4, but played good soccer they could be proud of!  Go Spikes!

Marin Team starts 2008 right! - Tuesday, March 11, 2008

On Saturday, the Marin Team took on UCA in our first pre-season scrimmage of 2008.  It was a beautiful day for soccer, and the Spikes were in mid-season form!  Bob Hartnagel netted the first Spikes goal of 2008 to give us the lead.  Gil Chavez made it 2-0 on a beautifully taken free kick from just outside that he bent into the upper corner of the net.  We conceded our only goal on a well taken UCA free kick right before the half.  Throughout the 2nd half, we continued to press UCA, moving the ball well, and generating many other quality chances.  When the final whistle blew, we were 2-1 victors over the team that won our division last year.  Go Spikes!

Spikes Marin Team wins MSL Div-B tournament! - Sunday, August 26, 2007
The Spikes/Marin Team capped an outstanding season with 2 wins yesterday to win the B Division of the MSL end-of-season tournament.  We faced a very tough opponent in the Semi-Finals: Club Marin.  During the regular season we played the "Club Marin Bhoys", but they brought many of the A-Division players onto their tournament team... and we beath them anyway!  We played some of our best soccer all season, but about 25 min into the 1st half, gave up a penalty kick on a questionable call.  It was scored, but called back by the referee for encroachment into the box.  This time Matthew had their striker's number, and saved his second attempt!  0-0 at half.  Not 5 minutes into the 2nd half, our effort forced an own goal, and that's all our oustanding defense needed.  We held their attack through the rest of the half, and advanced to the finals 1-0.

Our finals opponent was Amistad, who had beat previously undefeated UCA on penalty kicks in their semi-final, and were riding high.  Our superior conditioning, and deeper bench played a huge role in our ensuing route of Amistad in the finals.  Final score 8-2!  Our goal scorers were Chris Fajardo (with his first 2 goals as a Spike - Congrats Chris), Karl, Barry, Bob, Pat M, Chris J, and Brian B.  One defensive callout: Michael Pfyl's outstanding man-marking of their strongest striker, shutting him down to the point that he subbed himself out of the game!

Thought we finished in 4th place in the league this year, the Spikes can call themselves MSL B-Div Tournament Champioins!  At 12-1-6, this is the best regular season record the Spikes have earned in the last 7 years!  Way to end the season.  Kudos to every player who donned a Spikes  / Marin uniform this year - all 27 of you.  Go Spikes!!!

Marin Team falls to UCA, advances to Semi-finals - Monday, August 20, 2007
The Spikes / Marin Team fell 3-2 to league leader's UCA in our 3rd and last round-robin game of the B-Division tournament.  That puts us in 2nd place of the A group, and into the semi-finals vs. the Club Marin Bhoys next week.  We fell behind 2-0 in the first half on a corner kick, and then a strong shot that snuck by Matthew.  But we batled back, scoring our first goal to go into half time 2-1.  We came out strong in the 2nd half, and tied the game up on a beautiful combination between Karl and Chris J, who scored our second goal.  Frustratingly we conceeded the winning goal with just 4 minutes to go.  Hopefully we'll see UCA in the Finals, and get to take revenge then.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team makes it two in a row! - Saturday, August 11, 2007
On a beautiful Saturday in Mill Valley, the Spikes/Marin team put forth a great team effort to beat San Geronimo 5-2.  Chris Jansen opened for us heading a ball over their keepr's outstreached arms as he approached the edge of his box.  San Geronimo got on the board, well sort of, with the help of the world's laziest referee.  Matthew stopped a rolling ball along our goal line before even part of the ball had crossed the line, but the referee's view from 40+ yards away was that it was a goal.  That turned up our intensity!  The Spikes struck back twice in the 1st half (Chris, Brian).  In the 2nd half, York put in (another) garbage goal, and Adel got one.  We gave up one real goal, but played strong defense all day to come away with the convincing win.  This secured our spot in the Semi-finals.  Go Spikes!

Marin Spikes Begin Tournament with a "W" - Saturday, August 04, 2007
The Marin Team began its 2007 end-of-year tournament with a 2-1 victory over the Pikers.  After delaying the start 30 minutes to remove the "other" football players from the field, we got off to a somewhat shaky start.  About 15 minutes into the game, a PK was awarded against us, and the Pikers took a 1-0 lead.  But as we have done so many times this season, the Spikes fought back, and won!  Later in the 1st half, York scored his team-leading 6th goal to tie it up.  Chris Jansen scored his 2nd of the year at the top of the 2nd half on a 55 yard break away to earn the Spikes 3 points.  Great work today!  Go Spikes!

Marin Team Falls to Napa FC. - Sunday, July 29, 2007
In the last regular season game of the 2007 season, the Marin Team fell to Napa FC.  An absolutely beautiful run by Gil led toAdel scoring in the upper left corner of the net in the first half to get us on the board.  Gil Chavez took a beautiful freek kick that struck the post later in the half, but that was about it for our offense.  Next week we face the Pikers in the first of 3 round-robin games for the 2007 MSL tournament.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team rebounds - Takes all 3 points from Amistad - Sunday, July 22, 2007
This week, the Spikes/Marin Team took on Amistad, looking to get back on a wining streak.  That's just what we did.  The Marin Team completely outplayed our opponents, who went parts of the game with only 10 men due to constant injuries.  We scored first on a beautiful Bob Hartnagel blast to the lower right corner.  We gave up the equalizer on a sneaky shot right along the end line, but battled back to earn the game winner in the 88th minute.  Credit for this goal goes to John Kiladis for his strong header, though it looked to have been deflected by their defense on the way in.  Final score: 2-1 Spikes.  This game could have been a blowout - we out shot our opponents about 25 - 5.  Our fortitude and work rate that earned us the last-minute win moved us to 3rd place in the B-Division Table.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team falls to League Leaders - Tuesday, July 17, 2007
The Marin Team came out strong aginst undefeated league leaders UCA.  After a few minutes of settling in, Patrick McCarthy scored our first goal on sheer effort, putting in a rebound behind their keeper.  York scored our second goal later in the first half heading in a Gil Chavez cross that came off the cross bar.  2-0 Spikes at half time.  UCA came on strong in the second half, scoring 3 goals to come back and win the game.  A frustrating result, after such a promising start to the game.  Next time... Go Spikes!

Marin Team picks up 3 points via forfiet - Monday, July 02, 2007
The Marin Team ended up with the weekend off, following San Geronimo's forfiet of this weekends fixture.  We earned the equivalent of a 3-0 win, and remain in 3rd place in the league - tied on points with Napa FC, who we play for the second time on July 28.  There is no game next week (July 7).  We pick up on July 14 against first place UCA.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team comes up short against Pikers - Monday, June 25, 2007
The Marin Team lost to the Pikers this Saturday 0-1.  It was a hard fought game, in which we produced the beginning of many good opportunities, but never quite got that final shot-on-goal.  We played the Pikers to a 0-0 end of the first half, but gave up one goal in the 2nd half on an admittedly pretty cross and header finish.  We're now in 3rd place in the B-Division, and ready to rebound against San Geronimo next weekend.  Full game report hereGo Spikes!

Marin Team gets back on track - Sunday, June 17, 2007
The Marin Team beat the Club Marin Bhoys 1-0 yesterday to improve its 2007 record to 6-1-2.  After a shaky first few minutes, we woke up for this 9:00 am game, shook off our hangovers, and stepped up our play.  The result of the game was never really in question, as we dominated possession, and created many more great opportunities than the score line reveals.  The game winner was a beautiful one-touch finish by York off a perfect Chris Jansen cross.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team drops tough one to Marin FC Kono - Sunday, June 10, 2007
The Marin team struggled early against a strong Marin FC Kono team - who scored 4 times in less than 20 minutes.  After settling in, we played the last 70 minutes of the game to a 2-2 tie - the final score ending 6-2.  We were unlucky in those first few minutes - They only took 4 shots, but three were that perfect unstoppable strike, and the last off a corner kick that rebounded multiple times and luckly landed right at their striker's feet 3 yeards from goal.  We did create many good chances, coming with in inches on 4 or 5 shots.  We'll shake this one off, and come out strong next week.  Full Game Report here.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team ties Napa FC, remains 2nd in league - Saturday, June 02, 2007
The Marin team earned a tough point today, tieing 3rd place Napa FC 1-1 to remain in 2nd place in our league.  In this hard-fought game, we fell behind 20 minutes in, but never gave up.  Coach Center moved us to a very offensive formation in the second half, and it paid off.  After constant pressure, Brian Burns' oustanding effort produced our tieing goal in the 93rd minute just before the final whistle.  Full game report hereGo Spikes!

Spikes win GOLD in Atlanta! - Wednesday, May 30, 2007
The Spikes returned to the Hotlanta Soccer Classic after a 6 year hiatus, but picked up right where we left off.  The 13 Spikes fought through a sweltering heat to win all 5 of their games and a gold medal over the weekend.  We scored 11 goals and gave up only one all tournament.  Congratulatinons to the team.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team... Back on track - Saturday, May 19, 2007
The Marin Team improved to 5-1 today with a strong win over 4th place Amistad, 3-1.   York scored twice, and Adel added one and continues to lead the team with 4 goals in 6 games.  We posessed the ball more than 2/3 of the game, and generated many quality opportunities.  The Spikes were without many regular players, and proved once again how strong our roster is this year.  Full Game Report hereGo Spikes!

Win Streak Ends at 4 - Sunday, May 13, 2007
After a 4-0 start to the season, the Marin Team lost its first game to UCA, the other undefeated team in our league, 0-2.  UCA scored both of their goals in the first half - the seond of which was on a free kick following a very questionable call by the referee just 3 minutes before half time.  The Spikes fought hard all game, and despite some flared tempers, created many quality opportunities.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team makes it 4 in a row! - Saturday, May 05, 2007
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Spikes' Marin Team improved their record to 4-0 - our best start to a season in at least the last 7 years!  Playing against an 0-3 San Geronimo team that was clearly better than their record, we fought hard all game to earn the "W".  Adel scored the first goal with sheer determination off a beautiful Gil Chavez corner kick in the 1st half.  Karl put in our second on a picture-perfect head ball in the 2nd, after they had tied the game.  Matthew came up with one big save in the 2nd half to preserve the win.  Go Spikes!

That's 3... and counting - Sunday, April 29, 2007
The Marin Team won its third game in a row to start the 2007 season yesterday 1-0 against the Pikers.   Though we only managed to put one shot into the back of their net, it was all we needed.  The Spikes' defense was solid allowing the Pikers only 2 real chances the entire game.  We've given up only 1 goal in 3 games!  The midfield dominated the Pikers all game long, and the offense created a dozen quality chances.  The Marin Team's now 3-0 and +6 in GD column.  Full game report to come shortly.  Go Spikes!

Marin Team Keeps Rolling - Saturday, April 21, 2007
On a gray day, with a very short bench, the Marin Team pulled together for a strong 3-1 win over the Club Marin Bhoys.  Congrats to the team for an outstanding effort all game long, coming back from a 0-1 deficit, and pushing through almost the entire second half without a sub to win our second game in a row.  Congrats to Lubos for scoring his first goal as a Spike (on a beautiful half-volley, no less).  We've now +5 in the goal differential column, undefeated, and tied for 1st place in our league!  View the complete Game ReportGo Spikes!
